Blocking Advertisers

Block single advertisers or groups of buyers.

Use IAB Categories

IAB content categories are used to categorize the content of web pages and apps. The categories are defined by the IAB; for details see the IAB Quality Assurance Guidelines Taxonomy.

An example of some IAB categories that could be blocked: Business, Education, Food and Drink.

An example of blocking using IAB categories.

  • Tier 1: Food and Drink (larger overall group to block)
  • Tier 2: Coffee/Tea (smaller, more specifically defined part of the Tier 1 group)

How to Create a Block Group

A block group allows you to set-up categories and advertiser domains that you want blocked from running on your inventory. Creating block groups is efficient because once a group is created it can be used multiple times, across many ad sources. Block groups are available across all of your placements and apps or sites.

A default block group is a group of advertisers that is set up at the Marketplace level that can quickly be applied across all Marketplace Tags. Use a default block group for those advertisers (individual or by category) you wish to block on a regular basis. When a default block group is used you can also block additional advertisers (individual, category or group) by setting up another group.

  1. From the left navigation menu, select Block Groups in the Account Settings section.
  2. Click Add New.
The Create Publisher Block Group window opens:

  3. Name - define a name for the block group. Use something that is descriptive and meaningful to you, such as "Publisher Standard Block Group".
  4. Select Block Groups - add existing block groups to your new group.
Click the box to expand it, and select one or several groups by browsing or searching the categories, then select a group by clicking it. Once you have added all desired groups, click anywhere outside the expanded box to collapse it.
  5. Categories - block whole categories of advertisers based on IAB categories. Click this box to expand it and select one or several categories or sub-categories. Once you have added all desired categories click anywhere outside the expanded box to collapse it.
  6. Advertisers Domains - designate specific advertiser’s domains you want to block. Enter the desired domain URLs without the prefix. (Example: domain.com but not https://www.domain.com/)
Note: Only the base URL can be blocked. Subdomains can not be individually blocked at this time. Example: Blocking domain.com will block domain.com/abc and domain.com/xyz, but blocking domain.com/abc is not possible.
  7. Click Save.

The new block group is created and can now be assigned to a demand source. (See "How to Assign Block Groups to a Demand Source" below.
Note: For the categories and the domain, it is possible to download and upload bulk data in .csv format (see below).

How to Modify a Block Group

  1. From the left navigation menu, select Block Groups under the Account Settings section.
  2. Select the action button at the right side of an existing block group and select Edit.
  3. Change the selection in the Select Block Groups, Categories, or Advertisers Domains boxes according to your needs.
  4. Click Save.

The block group is modified and propagates down to all ad sources which this block group has been assigned; the changes take effect in about 20 minutes.

How to Download/Upload Bulk Data in Block Groups

If you do not want to remove a lot of categories and advertisers domains in your block groups manually it is possible to upload them as bulk data in .csv format.

  1. From the left navigation menu, select Block Groups in the Account Settings section.
  2. For an existing block group, select the action button at the right side of an existing block group and select Edit from the drop down.
  3. On the right side of the Categories or Advertisers Domains box, click Show CSV to switch the view of the selected objects to a comma separated format.
  4. To download categories or domains, copy the selection to your clipboard, paste it into a text editor and save it in .csv format.
  5. To upload categories or domains, open the .csv file in a text editor, copy the content to your clipboard, and paste it into the box.
  6. Click Save.

  3. In the new group, change the name according to your needs.
  4. Modify the block groups, categories and advertisers domains according to your needs.
  5. Click Save.

The new group is created and can be assigned to a demand source. Updating or changing a group automatically propagates the information to all ad sources that use that group.

How to Remove Outdated Block Groups

Over time, the advertiser domains or IAB categories that are blocked as a group may need adjusting, updating or no longer apply at all. By periodically reviewing and removing outdated Block Groups, you keep your inventory open to demand partners or ad campaigns that you previously denied.

Follow these steps to remove outdated Block Groups from many ad sources at once:

  1. From the left navigation menu, select Block Groups in the Account Settings section.
  2. Select the action button (three dots ... ) at the right side of the Block Group Name which you wish to remove and select Edit.
  3. Use the checkboxes to unselect and remove the Block Groups from specific Ad sources.
  4. Be sure to Save.

Follow these instructions to update individual Block Groups at the ad source level:

  1. From the main dashboard click the Marketplace tab, then click the view Marketplace Details button.
  2. Select the ad source you want to update Block Groups. In the ad source window that opens Select the Blocking tab.
  3. Make adjustments to the Groups or Additional Categories and Domains. Click the x to remove blocked categories or advertiser domains that are no longer needed. Close and Save your work.

Block Groups may be adjusted and updated as many times as needed, however, at this time they can not be eliminated completely.
